Nico van der Geest is the custodian of the Dutch DNA database. He started in forensic research in 1992, at the NFI. He started doing casework and in developing and implementing STR research for forensic purposes. During this period he was also involved in starting up the Dutch DNA database. In 1997 he became an accredited forensic scientist, and was involved in over 2500 criminal cases. From 2009 to 2012 he was lab manager of the DNA-lab at NFI during which he was responsible for implementing NGM at the NFI. And in 2018 started as the Custodian of the Dutch DNA database, where he is involved in a complete reorganization of the processes and the IT, due to new legislation that will be active in 2026.
